Raised in 1758, the Madras Regiment is the oldest infantry regiment of the Indian Army, drawing its motto straight from the Bhagavad Gita. Built on the strength of soldiers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, the regiment has fought from the Carnatic Wars to Kashmir, the Sino-Indian conflict, and the wars of 1965 and 1971, going into battle behind the cry "Veera Madrassi, Adi Kollu, Adi Kollu." Disciplined. Fearless. Unbroken.
Over 260 years of unbroken service. No regiment in the Indian Army carries a longer lineage — or a heavier honour.
