The story of the Mahar Regiment is unlike any other in the Indian Army — and that is precisely what makes it extraordinary.

The Mahar community of Maharashtra, known as Bumiputera — sons of the soil — carried a centuries-old tradition of defending their land from invaders and outsiders, long before any regiment was ever raised in their name. Under Shivaji Maharaj, they served as guards in hill forts and as soldiers, and famously defended the fort of Purandar from Mughal forces in 1665. 

Raised in 1941, the regiment went to war in the Burma Campaign, helped escort lakhs of refugees to safety during the violence of Partition, fought in Ladakh during the 1962 war, served in Punjab during the 1971 war, and won the nation's highest gallantry award — the Param Vir Chakra — for the action of Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran during peacekeeping operations in Sri Lanka in 1987.
