Artillery came to India's battlefields in 1526, when Mughal Emperor Babur used gunpowder firearms and field artillery at the Battle of Panipat to defeat the much larger army of Ibrahim Lodhi — setting a precedent for every battle on the subcontinent that followed. Five centuries later, the tradition lives on.
