Maratha valour is inseparable from Shivaji — the illustrious king whose saga remains the most powerful motivational symbol of the regiment. Raised in August 1768 as the 2nd Battalion Bombay Sepoys, the Maratha Light Infantry is the most senior light infantry regiment of the Indian Army and its most decorated — with over 60 battle honours to its name. From the jungles of Southeast Asia in World War II to Kargil, these soldiers have fought with the guerrilla spirit of the Sahyadris in their blood — swift, unpredictable, and unbreakable. The command of "attention" does not exist in this regiment — a Maratha soldier is always supposed to be at attention.
